area forecast discussion
national weather service cleveland oh
715 am est sun feb 11 2018

.synopsis...
low pressure will move northeast from kentucky across western
pennsylvania to new york today along a stationary front. another
low will move across ontario dragging a cold front across the
region early monday. high pressure will follow, building in for
monday and tuesday.

&&

.near term /through monday/...
light precipitation is approaching the southern cwa as low
pressure tracks into the ohio valley early this morning. a warm
front extends northeast from the low with temperatures in the
lower 30s to the north and near 40 to the south. warmer air is
expected to quickly expand north this morning as the low tracks
northeast. before this occurs, concerned there will be an hour
or two of light freezing rain in morrow and knox counties. a
light glaze is possible before temperatures warm to above the
freezing mark by 9 am. have issued an sps to highlight this but
no plans to expand the advisory as the window of concern will be
brief.

previous discussion... will have a winter weather advisory west
third through 20z for freezing rain/drizzle.

a tricky temperature and precipitation type forecast for today
as low pressure follows a stationary front northeast out of
kentucky to western pa by mid day. have followed hrrr pop
guidance for placement and an hourly mos blend for temp trends
across the region, with warming east and brief warming west
followed by cooling. main problem here is the warm intrusion
aloft that will turn all precip to rain through much of the day
although deeper cold air west portion of the precip will allow
for sleet. with temps below freezing west, precip over indiana
will pivot towards morning and then begin moving east across the
area as freezing rain/drizzle west third/half of the area.
expect that by the time precip arrives further east towards noon
temps should be above freezing. this afternoon temps drop east
possibly allowing for freezing rain for a few hours this
evening. tonight drier air moves in from the west as high
pressure approaches. have clearing trends in for the sky however
would surprised if the clearing is delayed a few hours into
monday. monday should be a nice day with increasing sun although
temps will remain below normal.

&&

.short term /monday night through wednesday night/...
high pressure overhead on monday night will shift to new
england on tuesday. temperatures will fall to the lower teens
and single digits monday night with mostly clear skies and light
winds. beyond that brief cool down, a warming trend will get
underway through mid-week. winds develop out of the south behind
the departing high with a warm front lifting north across the
area on wednesday. temperatures expected to surge into the mid
and upper 40s with the passage of the warm front. clouds will be
on the increase wednesday afternoon but expect light rain to
hold off until wednesday night when more substantial low level
moisture arrives. after one area of low pressure passes north of
the lake wednesday night, a second wave of low pressure will
track northeast out of the southern plains on thursday. spread
exists between the long range models with the track of this
system with the 00z ecmwf exhibiting a more northern track
across lower michigan while the 00z gfs shows a solution across
southern ohio. storm track will have an impact on how fast we
cool behind the front and how much residual precipitation lags.
for now have gone with a blended approach that will need refined
as models come into better agreement. warmed highs on thursday
up a couple more degrees which is supported by even the faster
and cooler gfs.

&&

.long term /thursday through saturday/...
although deeper moisture pushes south of the area quickly on
friday, will hold onto a low 20-30 pop in the snowbelt as
sufficient moisture may remain for a few light snow showers.
temperatures on friday behind the front will return to more
seasonal values in the lower 30s. dry conditions expected on
saturday as high pressure builds east across the ohio valley.

&&

.aviation /12z sunday through thursday/...
widespread low ifr conditions remain across the area as a low
pressure system approaches from the south. freezing rain is
possible at tol/fdy between 13-17z. temperatures at eastern
sites are expected to climb above freezing by the time the
precipitation arrives but that will be something to watch.
elsewhere visibilities are expected to lower as a warm front
lifts north into the area and may be below a mile at
mfd/cak/yng. as the low passes to the east this afternoon, winds
will shift around to the west and will see both ceilings and
visibilities start to improve. vfr possible at tol/fdy after 02z
as much drier air arrives.

outlook...non-vfr possible tuesday night.

&&

.marine...
low pressure will track northeast through the ohio valley and
eastern great lakes today. easterly winds of 10-15 knots this
morning will back to westerly at 10-20 knots by this evening. high
pressure will build east across the great lakes region on monday,
reaching new england on tuesday bringing a period of light winds.
winds will develop out of the southwest on tuesday with a warm front
lifting north across lake erie late wednesday.
