area forecast discussion
national weather service cleveland oh
618 am est fri mar 9 2018
an upper low to the north of the area will move off to the east
today. surface high pressure will build east across the great
lakes this weekend. low pressure is expected to remain well
south of the area on sunday as it tracks off the east coast
early next week.
.near term /through saturday/...
snow showers continue unabated to the east of cle but there has
been a decrease in activity further west and south as slightly
drier air works into the area. clouds continue to slowly erode
over southeastern lower mi so do not expect another flare up
west of cle. have gone ahead and cancelled the advisories for
medina...summit and portage counties as those areas haven't seen
much snow overnight and webcams indicate mainly wet roads.
expect the current activity over geauga county to continue as
winds aloft remain nw. that will change later this morning as
the flow is expect to become wnw or w depending on which model
you believe. this should put nw pa in the bullseye for the
heavier snow today. will leave the remainder of the headlines go
as is. will keep small mentions for snow showers pretty much
the entire area through midday as moisture from lakes michigan
could find it`s way to nw and north-central oh. by afternoon
some breaks should start to show up in the overcast in the west
and clearing is expected from west to east beginning tonight.
expect the lake effect to really begin to diminish this
afternoon with nothing more than scattered snow showers at the
east end of the area tonight. things really dry out on saturday
and will try to sunshine all areas.
there is now snow cover over most of the forecast area and
suspect guidance temps may be a tad warm today. will stay to the
cool side of guidance through the period.
.short term /saturday night through monday night/...
the short term begins saturday night with dry air in place as high
pressure ridges in from the northwest. the high, coupled with fairly
dry air will remain dominant through sunday night as low pressure
moves east through the tennessee valley. sunday night the gfs does
bring the low into west virginia with moisture into eastern oh but
still believe the dry air across the area will win out. monday this
low moves off the east coast and quickly deepens into another
nor`easter as upper low pressure drops southeast across the great
lakes into the area. models show enough moisture into the area
during the afternoon for snow showers and given 850mb temps around
-12c would expect lake enhancement as well. for now will have
chance pops for the afternoon east half but may need to boost
pops if this develops as shown. moisture and waves of low
pressure will continue to rotate south across the great lakes
monday night and tuesday as the deep surface low moves to nova
scotia so will continue with chance pops central and east.
temps below normal.
.long term /tuesday through thursday/...
snow showers should be ongoing across the eastern half of the area
tuesday night into wednesday with moisture continuing to rotate
south across the region. wednesday night through thursday high
pressure and dry air builds in. temps below normal but moderating
toward normal by thursday.
.aviation /12z friday through tuesday/...
as expected the lake effect activity has diminished some with
all of the taf sites currently reporting mvfr or better vsbys.
still think the main activity will shift from just east of cle
into nw pa later this morning which will bring lower vsbys back
to eri for a time. could also be brief ifr snow showers at cak
and yng early today but other than those 3 sites will not
forecast anything lower than mvfr. in the west vfr conditions
will persist with skies becoming sct this afternoon. clearing
will progress across the remainder of the area tonight. west
wind will pick back up with gusts to around 20 knots possible
through late afternoon.
will continue with the small craft advisory but may need to trim it
in the west and extend it in the east. otherwise, saturday, high
pressure builds in from the north allowing winds to diminish. winds
will turn northeast sunday as low pressure moves through the
tennessee valley however speeds will remain 10 to 15 knots. winds
will back to northeast monday as the low moves off the east coast.
tuesday, northwest winds will increase to 15 to 20 knots as the low
deepens and moves up the northeast coast.
